Cooking

I did it again. I cooked last night. I made SCONES!

I am going to Sugar and Spice’s for dinner tonight and I am taking my yummy potatoes. This entire dinner grew out of a discussion on bearnaise sauce. Since there is no time today to make the potatoes, I made them last night to be heated up tonight.

After cutting, measuring, and mixing, the potatoes went into the oven and I started on the scones. I have been jonesing for scones for a couple of weeks and I had this odd surge of productive energy. J at work calls it Misdirected Project Energy. May I have more MPE please? Following the Joy of Cooking recipe, I made a batch of scones that were ready for the oven after the potatoes were done. Same temp, amazing.

While they were cooking, I made Mock Devonshire Cream following instructions from Sugar. I had also gotten some No Sugar Added jam/jelly. So, for my before-bed snack I had scones with devonshire cream and jam with a lovely cup of decaffeinated English breakfast tea. Yummy. Tonight it is steak with bearnaise sauce, asparagus and parmesan-garlic potatoes.

It has been a long time since I have been excited about food. It is kinda nice. I feel like I touching on feelings/attitudes I haven’t dealt with since the very early 90′s. Back before I got tired of needing to eat 6 times a day. I use to cook a lot.

The verdict:
Potatoes – Yummy, need to make them more often
Devonshire Cream – Success, the recipe has been formalized and written in my personal cookbook. Vanilla is a nice touch.
Scones – Good but a little to dry and crumbly and a bit too salty, I think I need to find another recipe to try. Or tweak the fructose and moisture on this recipe.

Favorites in my personal cookbook:
Pumpkin Muffins
Pasta Pizza Salad
Mocha Mouse Crepes
Pizza Fondue
Devonshire Cream
Tuna Noodle Casserole
White Pizza
Grandma’s Green Beans
I am sure there are others but these are the ones that I want bad enough to actually make for no other reason other than I want them.

Things that I would like but take a lot of effort or make too much for one person:
Mom’s pot roast
Honey Dijon Chicken
Chicken with cream of asparagus soup and rice
Mom’s meatloaf
Mom’s stew
Sunrise breakfast casserole

I have decided to start a list of food I like for the next time when I don’t want anything. Unfortunately, they all require effort but maybe I can capture some of the excitement and make it worth a little effort. I have decided that cooking and eating should not be linked. Cook it one day and eat it the next. That way the amount of time it took to cook doesn’t not get weighed directly with the amount of time it took to eat.
