onion and spoons

I can’t remember the tv show but one of the ones I watch had a bit in it where the characters had spoons in their mouths when cutting onions to keep them from crying. I was cutting an onion up tonight so I thought I would try it out and was amazed that I didn’t have any need to cry. I have tried running water, dipping the knife in water, cutting underwater which has helped but never like this. Wonder why I never heard of it before. I don’t even know why it works. I don’t know if it is the metal or the act of keeping something in your mouth when cutting that stops the eye irritation.

I thought it was cool so I am passing it on.

  1. Ooh, neat. The last few onions I bought made me cry more than usual (I think they were a slightly different type of onion). I’ve heard that rubbing your hands on something steel will take onion and garlic scents off – I bet this is related. I’ll have to try it.

    1. the steel removing the smell thing never worked for me. This time around, I used a rubber glove for the hand holding the onion and it worked wonderful. I love the smell of onion on my hand and will drive myself nuts with it (it makes me hungry even when stuffed) all night if I didn’t use the glove.

    1. That’s right! Veronica Mars! I couldn’t put all the images together to get the show. I had an idea it might have been Gilmore Girls but they never cook on that show. Thanks!

And yeah, it does seem to work. Veronica Mars is the only place I have ever seen/heard of it so I was surprised as well.

    1. I forgot about the swim goggles. I have tried that route as well. I have never had really good goggles so they only worked somewhat and after a little bit, they were really hard to see through.

Gotta say, when I saw the spoon in the mouth thing on the show, it looked pretty dorky. The way they held it (and I copied it) was upside-down and hanging down. Like you are trying to stick the spoon to your nose but ended up with it in your mouth instead. I don’t know if the orientation matters or not.
