What are your golf balls?

jadecat9 posted this and I really liked it. So here it is for you all to read and ponder.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large, empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles
and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students unanimously responded “yes.”

The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things–your faith, your family, your children, your health, your friends, your favorite passions–things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life could still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else–the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Go to Church, Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner or a date. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house, and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled.

“I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of beers”

So, I guess, what’s YOUR golfballs?
And what beer do you drink? :-P

For me?:

Golfballs
Being able to dress in costume. My close friends. Variety in my life. My spirituality/Quest. The ability to escape (TV/Books/Movies). Being able to take care of myself. Learning. Dancing.

Pebbles
Making costumes, plethora of events/activities, my car and the ideas surrounding it, many friends/acquaintances, music, creativity, toys

Sand
My job, eating

My Beer
Sugar!!!

  1. Beyond (and before) being a meme here, this is the foundation of many a time management course. Franklin-Covey, for one, uses this same principle to help people figure out how to prioritize what is important in one’s life. The beer is a cute touch I have heard before also (not one included in the F-C course though). Knowing how sugar effects you, are you saying that you treat it like some people treat beer?

    1. The effect of sugar for me has been like alcohol, effect of alcohol has been described to be like drugs (rum=LSD). I don’t even want to attempt drugs to see what they do.

The good news is that at this moment, I seem to be able to only have the nice effects of sugar, a good buzz instead of migraines. In fact, it is looking like it might even be important in my spiritual quest to bring me back down to earth afterwards. One night I was so worked up I couldn’t go to sleep lying in bed for hours. One hershey kiss later, I was out in just a few minutes. Other people use salt water, I get sugar. :)

  2. Sugar?

What happened to the water? LOL.

As I told , a friend sent this to me, and I really liked it. I’m sure it’s been around a few times in various places in different formats.

I like water, I am fulfilled by water but thinking about it, sugar is much more like beer to me than water. It has an effect like alcohol and seems to be factoring into my spiritual side of things too. It seems to do the same thing that other people use salt water for.
